Cristiano Ronaldo’s winning penalty on Saturday night brought to an end an exciting season of Champions League football that finished in the most dramatic way possible. And UEFA have announced who the best performers of the season have been.
Inevitably the releasing of the Champions League squad of the season means we know who the best players in this season’s tournament have been, which is the obvious bit, but it also means we know which players are going to be introduced during the laboriously long group stage draw next season.
Unsurprisingly the squad this season is made up predominantly of players playing in Madrid. There’s six Real players and six from Atleti amongst the 18 man squad. The remaining six players are from Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG.
There’s absolutely no surprise in seeing Cristiano Ronaldo on the list after the Real Madrid forward ran away with the top scorer award having bagged 16 goals which put him seven ahead of second placed Robert Lewandowski whilst on the scoring front Thomas Muller might feel a little hard done by missing out with his eight goals.
La Liga dominates hugely with 16 of the 18 players playing in Spain although ‘only’ five of those are Spanish. England and the Premier League has no representation with only Joe Hart likely to have got in after Manchester City’s run to the semi-finals.
