The New York Mets will not be calling up slugger Peter Alonso this season.
The 23-year-old first baseman is batting .285 in the minors this year with 36 homers and 119 RBI. Although seemingly a head-scratching decision, the truth of the matter is that calling up Peter Alonso now would begin Alonso’s service time and it is unclear how much playing time he would actually get.
The Mets have had a disastrous season, but that doesn’t mean that their future is completely ruined. Unless, they mistreat their top prospects. Although not calling up Alonso may have been what was best for the organization, having upset players is not good for any team.
Alonso is excited to be at Citi Field, however, to accept the 2018 Sterling Award which honors the best players across the Mets’ four Single-A and above affiliates. Alonso was awarded Player of the Year and the Mets have a gem in the making.
