While a lot of driver and even fans have been jubilant over the changes for the 2020 season, there are some that aren’t very excited about where the season will conclude. In fact, one championship driver thinks it takes away from the uniqueness of the event.
“Part of the reasoning why Miami was a good finale is we only go there once a year,” Martin Treux Jr told for The Win. “It’s a completely unique race track. It’s the only true oval mile-and-a-half track we have, and you know basically over time, it’s not been dominated by one or two drivers.
Homestead Miami has served as the finale for NASCAR’s all three top series since 2002 and had been increasingly interesting to watch after the introduction of the new playoff format in 2014. With that being said, Miami Speedway’s date has been moved to the first part of the season and replaced with Phoenix International Raceway.
“That’s just by chance, I guess, but it’s been good for a lot of reasons. I think going there once was important and to keep guys kind of surprised when we show up a year later Truex Jr continued, ” That’s the one key element, you know, if we’re going to run a final championship race somewhere, we probably shouldn’t have already went there that season.”
Martin Truex Jr isn’t the only driver that chimed in on the change to NASCAR’s schedule, as Logano discussed the possibility of rotating the championship race around different locations, thus giving the big race a anything can happen kind of feel.
“We should change it every year, somewhere new, like the Super Bowl, right?” Logano said. “It’s a huge event for our sport, it’s the biggest one of the year obviously when you’re racing for a championship. I think it should move to a different market every year.”
Then there was former Cup Series driver and current analyst at NBC Sports, who claimed that NASCAR needed to grow a pair and hold the final race at Daytona International Speedway. His argument for this was that the Daytona 500 was already the sports biggest race, which should be enough to warrant a championship race as well.
Interestingly enough, NASCAR has already turned The July 4th weekend race at Daytona into the last race of the Cup Series’ regular season, which could be a sign that the sport will eventually make that move. With that being said, its hard to please everyone and of course people are going to have criticisms about what was chosen, but with the way the new schedule looks right now, its a very exciting time to be a NASCAR fan!
