Well, the stove is finally hot, but will the dam actually break this time?
After months of waiting for one of the big free agents to agree to terms, Yu Darvish finally agreed to a massive six-year $150 million deal. While we kind of assumed he’d be taking a discount after such a long and arduous inactive offseason, it appears he’s escaped unscathed, poised to make the maximum amount of cash.
And it can even grow further.
According to reports, there are plenty of incentives within the deal that make it a bit more interesting.
Darvish can earn an extra $2 million a year by winning the Cy Young award and $1 million for a 2-through-5 finish in the annual voting. He also has an opt out after 2019, which is…shockingly soon, and could clear plenty of payroll for the Cubbies if he dominates and wants to try his hand again at the open market. Low risk, and not bad at all for the Cubs.
People are making way too much of this contract because of how expensive it looks on paper. If the Cubs manage to hit big on Darvish and he wins the Cy Young then he absolutely deserves that bonus.
