Manchester United could be set to complete one of the biggest double deals in football history by luring two Real Madrid superstars to Old Trafford this summer.

Jose Mourinho is yet to make a real impact with the Red Devils domestically, having fallen short of pre-season expectations that suggested he could win the Premier League title in his first season at the club.

Despite spending heavily on the likes of Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly last year, as well as signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic for free, United look set to miss out on the top four, but will still qualify for the Champions League if they beat Ajax in the Europa League final.

In preparation for that perspective qualification, Mourinho is looking at his former club in a bid to sign two major players this summer. According to RCN Radio in Spain, a deal to sign James Rodriguez for £65million is already in place, while Gareth Bale is a £90million target, say Diario Gol.

Rodriguez, 25, is reportedly desperate to leave the Santiago Bernabeu with his dream move to Real turning sour after a year. He joined from Monaco for £73million after starring for Colombia at the 2014 World Cup but, after an impressive debut term under Carlo Ancelotti, James began to struggle when the Italian was sacked and replaced by Rafa Benitez and then, in January 2016, current boss Zinedine Zidane.

Zidane has not given the playmaker many opportunities and the subsequent decrease in confidence has clearly impacted on his performances. His likely arrival in the Premier League could do him the world of good, resurrecting his dwindling career.

Gareth Bale, meanwhile, is much more popular with Zidane but does still have his problems in Spain. Although he has helped win the Copa del Rey and two Champions Leagues since moving from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013, he is not universally popular with a demanding fanbase, while constant injury troubles have hampered his progress this season.
