Bryce Harper is set to be the marquee free agent in the 2018 class, assuming he doesn’t sign an extension with the Nationals before then. While several squads have already been mentioned as potential suitors (looking at you, Chicago), could one team out by the Bay make a surprise run at the former MVP?
The Giants have tried oh so hard to stay under the luxury tax, so they’ll certainly be in the mix for Harper, despite adding Andrew McCutchen to their outfield this winter.
If San Francisco can wade through the financial details and make Harper a loaded offer, they must. The Giants’ farm system is lacking in several departments, including the outfield (although Heliot Ramos certainly has potential).
Harper is from out West, and while he’s favored to join the Cubs because of his long-standing friendship with Kris Bryant, it’s far from a guarantee, especially if he wants to be the unquestioned leader of a ball-club.
