Despite being on the wrong side of 30 – let alone the sheer amount of criticism he receives – Ronaldo keeps on producing the goods for Real.

He might not be as fast as he once was, nor as agile, but there can be no doubting his prolific nature in front of goal.

Speaking after the game, Zinedine Zidane refused to take any credit for Ronaldo’s recent run of goalscoring form, which has seen him score eight goals in his last three European games.

“He is unique,” Zidane said, per the Daily Mail. “He knows that the games mount up over the season and over the years and that he has to rest from time to time, but I don’t think that is the only reason. He scores goals.”

However, there was an air of confusion about Ronaldo’s hat-trick after the game. In the tweet below, Real hailed the Portugal international for scoring his 400th goal for the club.

But as it turns out, Ronaldo hasn’t actually reached the landmark yet and instead finds himself agonisingly close on 399.

So why did Real say he’s scored 400? As Sky Sports report, back in September 2010 during a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad, Ronaldo scored a free-kick which deflected in off Pepe.

Pepe was given the goal officially, whereas Real cheekily awarded it to Ronaldo – but that’s not how it works unfortunately.

“Regardless of what the official match report says, the goal belongs to Cristiano,” is what Pepe told Marca, but the rules are the rules, and as a result, Ronaldo currently has 399 goals for Real.

How the 32-year-old will feel about Real’s mistake remains to be seen, but in his kind of form, it’s only a matter of time before he notches his 400th goal, and then it’s on to the next landmark.
