Tensions can grow seriously high in the latter half of a losing campaign, no matter the sport.
In the tail end of the 2017 season, Brian Snitker — who is very well-liked by players in the clubhouse — made a mistake and pitched reliever Jim Johnson over and over again, who couldn’t seem to buy an out.
During a game on August 23rd, 2017, the Braves were up 5-4 and Snitker brought in Johnson for relief. He faced four batters, walking one and giving up three hits, all without recording an out. All four batters scored. Another run would score after he left and the Braves lost the game 9-6.
After the game, then-president John Hart screamed at Snitker so loudly that the players in the clubhouse heard, and apparently Snitker was never the same for the rest of the season.
Hart’s screaming message to Snitker is not known, but if a player threatens to physically assault the president of his team, it probably was unwarranted.
Brian Snitker’s mistake of bringing in Johnson on that fabled night in August may have saved his job, because John Hart was alienated after excoriating Snitker for a decision he made in a losing season.
