WIMBLEDON 2016 PREVIEW: WHAT TO PAY ATTENTION TO?

Serena and her continue pursuit of Steffi

The question of whether Serena can tie Steffi Graf’s 22 grand slam record has been on repeat for almost a year. Serena has had three opportunities to tie Steffi, coming two matches short at the U.S. Open and one match short at both the Australian Open and French Open. Now she gets, what many tennis experts thinks is her best shot, at tying Steffi. Serena has a tough draw that has her potentially facing players who have either beaten her or given her trouble within this season and last season. So all eyes, as usual, will be on Serena to see if she finally gets the job done. Given that grass suites Serena’s game very well and that she has been consistently going deep in tournaments, she will have her chances. Whether or not Serena can hold it together for all seven matches remains to be seen.

The invincible Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic made history by winning this year’s French Open. He became the first male player since Rod Laver in the late 60s to hold all four major championships at once. At this point it appears that Novak will also be the first man since Laver to win a calendar slam and given that this is an Olympic year he might have be able to complete the golden slam. It is safe to say that Djokovic is the overwhelming favorite going into Wimbledon. He has dominated his peers and it’s hard to envision a scenario in which he loses. Perhaps there is a player that might make Novak work for the title but who will actually be able to stop him, no one knows.

Federer looks to get back on track

Roger Federer withdrew from this year’s French Open because he believed he wasn’t 100 percent healthy. It was a smart move considering Wimbledon is and always will be Roger’s best chances of winning another major. Last year Federer lost in the finals to Djokovic so will this year be any different (this year if Roger and Novak meet it will be in the semis)? Roger played some warm up grass tournaments to get in match play and he did the unthinkable by losing them, although he did go deep in them. Since Roger couldn’t win those tennis tournaments, fans have to wonder how he will he perform at Wimbledon this year. Federer has won Wimbledon seven times therefore it would be foolish to doubt his ability to win it all. Roger’s health will also be a factor at Wimbledon. Can Roger’s body hold up for two weeks? Fans will have to just wait and see.
